Foundations of the Virginia Satir Model for Professionals:
Level One and Level Two

Virginia Satir believed that the best way to learn about the impact that one’s family of origin has on our current ways of coping with stress or conflict and the changes one wants to make in one’s life were to experience both- in the heart, mind and body. The strategies that she created for experiencing include sculpting, making a three generational family map, role-playing the coping stances, using the Mandala and Iceberg metaphors, family reconstruction and many others. Satir, and those who followed in her footsteps expanded and detailed these practices so that others could learn to use these elements in their therapeutic interactions with families.

In our efforts to teach other therapists, counsellors and teachers how to incorporate Satir’s processes into their practices, we follow the philosophy that Satir held. We want those studying the Satir model to experience what their clients will experience as they learn about themselves and grow towards their yearnings. During the training in Whitehorse in September/October 2016 and February 2017, you will experience various parts of the Satir model as a group. You will participate in family sculpts, family reconstruction, role-plays of therapy sessions and other exercises and learn experientially.
