AVANTA® was founded in 1977 by internationally famous family therapist, Virginia Satir and is now known as The Virginia Satir Network,
Each of these institutes stand on their own and are not operated by the Satir Global Network.

The Northwest Satir Institute is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in 1987 by individuals living in the State of Washington and in the Province of British Columbia, who have studied extensively with Virginia Satir and are committed to her theories and her training and education—toward becoming more fully human in their personal and professional lives. The Northwest Satir Institute's mission is to provide a broad educational context in which people may experience, understand, develop and use the Satir Model to access their creativity and wholeness and is the first of many institutes related to the Virginia Satir Global Network. The Slovak Satir Institute cooperates with the Czech Satir Institute in its mission and developing international training groups. Slovak trainers are team training members of the 4 year accredited Czech Satir program MOVISA I. And II. (MOdel of Virginia Satir).

The Satir Learning Centre of Ottawa promotes and applies methods and theories developed by Virginia Satir. A core principle of the Satir method is “congruent” communication, a style of communicating that allows people to give honest expression to their thoughts and feelings while ensuring that their verbal and non-verbal messages are in accord, or congruent. This communications approach also encourages awareness of the other person’s position and feelings, and the context of the relationship. Non-congruent communication is the result of coping techniques that lead to blaming, placating, super-reasonable or distracting behaviours. Each of these four non-congruent stances, learned in childhood for survival, tends to lower self-esteem of both speaker and listener, and promotes interpersonal conflict. Congruence promotes high self-esteem in self and others, and facilitates conflict resolution.

Virginia Satir (1916-1988) is internationally recognized for creativity in the practice of family therapy. Based on a conviction that people are capable of continued growth, change & new understanding, her goal was to improved relationships & communication within the family unit.
Referred to as the “Columbus of Family Therapy” and “everybody’s family therapist”, Satir stayed at the forefront of human growth and family therapy until her death in 1988. Virginia Satir, founder of the Satir Model, believed that therapy is an intense experience with the inner self. The counselor/therapist helps and encourages the client not only to accept and deal with the pain and problems but also accept and live an inner joy and peace of mind.

The Satir Professional Development Institute of Manitoba
The Satir Professional Development Institute of Manitoba or, as it is known less formally, the Manitoba Satir Institute, was founded in 1991 by individuals committed to furthering the work of Virginia Satir in helping people to better realize their true human potentials. The Manitoba Satir Institute is a non-profit educational organization with a mission to provide training and consultation services to individuals, couples, groups, and organizations in the Satir Model of human systems. The Institute offers professional training programs as well as workshops and seminars for the general public.
